Even if one states they are primarily a B/W photographer, there are times when the subject matter suggests the use of color. The subtle tonalities presented within the color spectrum are undeniable.
Being aware of master painters and photographers adds great wisdom to enhancing our own styles and approaches while communicating through art. For example, the subtle color palette of Andrew Wyeth matches well with my basic B/W imaging. There are just days in which I want to express myself in color.
